“What is it?” Mom asked.

I quickly shoved the books back on the shelf. My heart hammered so loud in my eardrums I could barely hear Mom’s alarmed question. All I knew was, I couldn’t let her see the doll.

It wasn’t safe.

“A spider!” I said, the lie quickly coming to my tongue. “A big hairy one, too.”

“Ewww,” Mom replied. She hated spiders almost as much as I did. “Did you squish it?”

“I don’t know,” I replied. “I think it got away.” I can’t let the doll get away!

“Gross,” she said. “I’m gonna go run and grab the spray, just in case it comes back.”

She stood from the pile of clothes she’d been organizing and headed toward the kitchen.

Quickly, before she returned, I grabbed one of Grandma’s old scarves. I figured I could wrap the doll in the scarf and run it to the bins outside. Maybe try to find a way to lock it in the trash so it couldn’t escape.

I pulled out the books again, hands trembling like I was unearthing a monster.

The doll wasn’t there.
